چکیده

Many internet applications can be adversely affected when end nodes are not in the same address realm and seek the assistance of NAT enroute to bridge the realms. NAT device alone cannot provide the necessary application/protocol transparency in all cases and seeks the assistance of Application Level Gateways (ALGs) where possible, to provide transparency. The purpose of this document is to identify the protocols and applications that break with NAT enroute. The document also attempts to identify any known workarounds. It is impossible to capture all the applications that break with NAT in a single document. This document attempts to capture as much information as possible, but by no means a comprehensive coverage. We hope this coverage provides clues for applications not covered here.

An SNMP Application Level Gateway for Payload Address Translation

This document describes the ALG (Application Level Gateway) for the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) by which IP (Internet Protocol) addresses in the payload of SNMP packets are statically mapped from one group to another. The SNMP ALG is a specific case of an Application Level Gateway as described in [15]. An SNMP ALG allows network management stations to manage multiple networks that...

NAT traversal for IPsec

Network Address Translator (NAT) is a technology that is used for allowing multiple computers in the network to share a single public IP address for accessing the Internet. The basic reason for NAT usage is the limited number of IPv4 addresses. NAT is widely used in the current networks where it is also used as cloaking service for computers in internal network, since all computers behind the N...

Adaptation Layer Translator (ALX) Design and Application

High quality video-conferencing is an efficient tool for interactive scientific collaboration in the research community, especially for researchers separated by substantial distance. With the wide deployment of broadband wide area IP networks such as the Internet2, there is an increasing demand for improved remote collaboration with these networks. In order to make the high quality video-confer...

NAT Traversing Solutions for SIP Applications

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has been proposed for multimedia services and wide-area connectivity in smart home environments (SHEs). An important issue for SIP deployment in SHEs is network address translator (NAT) traversing. SIP and Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) packets are delivered between an SHE (i.e., private IP network) and Internet (i.e., a public IP network) through an NAT fu...

Reasons to Move the Network Address Translator - Protocol Translator (NAT-PT) to Historic Status

This document discusses issues with the specific form of IPv6-IPv4 protocol translation mechanism implemented by the Network Address Translator Protocol Translator (NAT-PT) defined in RFC 2766. These issues are sufficiently serious that recommending RFC 2766 as a general purpose transition mechanism is no longer desirable, and this document recommends that the IETF should reclassify RFC 2766 fr...
